Choosing the right accommodation for you is essential when planning to study abroad. Whether you’re looking for affordability, cultural immersion, or friends, there is something to suit every student’s lifestyle and budget. Let us break down the most common accommodation options available to international students wanting to study in Japan!

1. Student Houses

Student houses are one of the most affordable options for international students and function much like dormitories. You have the choice of furnished single room or double room student houses, both of which provide shared facilities including a kitchen, bathroom and toilet. You will be sharing these spaces with students from around the world, creating a culturally-rich and social environment. Alongside your housemates, there is also an on-site staff member who can be a point of contact for questions and emergencies.

Depending on the location, your commute to school could range from a 10-minute walk to a 50-minute train ride. Monthly rent is between $520 and $980 USD, varying by room type, location, and duration of stay. Student houses are ideal for those looking for both affordability and safety.

2. Guesthouses

Guesthouses offer a similar setup to student houses in terms of rooms and facilities. You can choose between single or double rooms and will share common spaces including the kitchen, bathroom and toilet. However, unlike student houses, guesthouses are open to people of all backgrounds—not just students. This creates a more diverse environment where you can meet future friends from various professions and nationalities.

Commuting between guesthouses and schools typically takes 40 to 60 minutes by train. You can also expect monthly rent to range from $740 to $980 USD, depending on the location and room type. Guesthouses are a great option if you’re looking for a socially dynamic atmosphere outside the traditional student focused community setting.

3. Homestays

For those looking to fully immerse themselves in Japanese culture, homestays offer a unique and rewarding experience. You’ll live with a local Japanese family, giving you the chance to practice the language daily and learn cultural norms firsthand within your 2 to 12 week stay.

The average monthly rent is around $1,350 USD, inclusive of a daily breakfast and dinner. Commuting time from a homestay to school usually takes between 40 to 60 minutes by train. Homestays are recommended for students wanting to experience daily Japanese life, learning the rich history, culture, traditions and language of Japan. To be considered students must apply at least two months in advance!

4. Weekly Apartments

Weekly apartments are our most independent style of accommodation for students. As your home away from home, weekly apartments come fully furnished with their own private bathroom, kitchen, furniture and appliances. Commuting from weekly apartments to school takes about 30 minutes by train, depending on the location. You can also expect rent to vary between $980 and $1,500 USD per month, depending on room type and area. This option is ideal for students who value privacy and complete freedom over their schedule and lifestyle.
