Goshiwon (고시원)

Goshiwons (a.k.a Goshi-tels, one-room-tels and living-tels) are residential facilities with small rooms that are usually furnished with a bed, desk, and mini-fridge, as well as a common restroom, showers and laundry room on each floor. Most Goshiwons have separate floors for different genders.

Originally occupied by students preparing for various national exams, Goshiwons today are also home to many young working individuals. Rents vary by its location, facilities, room size and type (e.g. private restroom).

Flying Chalks’ recommendation: Goshiwons are perfect for students who are on a budget and just want a comfortable no-frills accommodation to reside in.

Goshipages (link here!) is a website that allows you to find Goshiwons and other housing options near your host university!

Hasukjib (하숙집)

Hasukjibs are similar to Goshiwons in that it provides rooms that usually furnished with a bed, desk, and mini-fridge, as well as a common restroom, showers and laundry room on each floor. It also usually has separate floors for different genders and rents vary by its location facilities, room size and type (e.g. private restroom).

Key differences are that meals are often included in the monthly rents and service levels a notch higher based on general consensus.

Flying Chalks’ recommendation: Hasukjibs are suited for students who do not want to over-spend on accommodation, yet values a comfortable stay and having meals provided. Should you plan to eat out often, you may want to negotiate with the owners to see if you can opt out for the meals option.

Guesthouse

Guesthouse can be viewed as a category that is in-between that of Hasukjib and hotels. While it is slightly pricier than Hasukjib, guesthouses usually provide room services like that of hotels. Room rates may vary by season and length of stay. The longer the stay, the cheaper the room rates are.

Flying Chalks’ recommendation: Guesthouses are popular among backpackers and students seeking short-term stays (up to 1 month). If you are one who values room service (i.e. lazy to clean your own room) and would not mind paying slightly more for it, guesthouse may be your desired choice.

Apartment / room rental

For students who are considering to rent an apartment or a room, do note that it is common in Korea for heavy deposits, which can amount to several months’ rental, to be paid in advance.

PNU is located in Busan. Busan really attractive city in Korea. It is the most active and warmhearted city in Korea. Actaully PNU is located near down town. I think the location is very good because if you like to go play in energetic place, you can go down town easily just take the subway. If you like some quite place, you can just go around PNU, beacause there are many trail, parks near PNU. Also there are so many opiton in eating or drinking. Near PNU, there are so many good place to eat or drink. It is very fun to find some place which is not famous but really good for me, it means some kind of hidden place for me. If you want to know about place to eat or drinking just message to me. I really want to share my place with you guys especially about drinking :) When you come to PNU, first time you will be embarrased because the tone of voice of Busan people is somewhat powerful so you can misunderstand that the people get upset. But never mind they are just talking. If you try to approach to them they will be kind to you so don't hesitate to approach to them.

Upon arrival in Korea, boy were we surprised when the greatest cultural difference hit us. Unlike in Singapore, that has eateries located in almost every corner of the neighborhood, there were many shops selling cosmetics almost everywhere in Korea! Our buddies were extremely welcoming and eventually became our “advisors”. Not only did our buddies pick us up from the airport to the accommodation, my buddy also helped me apply for the courses that I was interested in as well as provided advice on car rental. What more can I ask for!

I chose Korea for my exchange due to my interest in its long history, culture, tradition, people as well as the “K-wave” phenomenon that is happening even up to today. On top of that, I am always driven to be independent, to plan my own trips and get out of my comfort bubble, my home, Singapore. In essence, I wanted to experience life on my own with everything under my control while picking up a third language and I thought this would be the best time for me to do so aiding my career searching at the same time. After the time “alone” in Korea, my aims were met! I managed to pick up a third language, forge lasting friendships with the locals and learned how some things can be done while not the other. I have also learned that we should not take things for granted and cherish the wonderful moments in life such as how Singapore is a great city to live in. Furthermore, there are many people living in poverty that were reinforced from this exchange It made me want to quickly do my part in giving back to the society.

PNU is one of the best learning places in Korea. It is nature friendly place since it is located in a mountain. Especially during the spring and autumn season, the landscape is awesome. Furthermore, there are lots of great restaurants just in front of school, you cannot finish them if you stay here only for one semester. Staying and studying in PNU must be one of the best experiences in your university life.
