For international students (study, advanced studies, or fieldwork):

You are required to apply for the Student VISA. For study periods of more than 180days (approximately 6 months), the X1 type VISA is needed. For study periods of less than 180days, the X2 VISA is needed.

Students staying for more than 180 days (X1 VISA students) should also apply for a temporary Residence Permit from the local Public Security Bereau with the following documents within 30 days upon entry into China:

  1. An official letter from the International College, “Admission Notice”, JW202 Form or JW201 Form;
  2. A valid passport and VISA (copy included);

  6. Visa or Residence Permit Application Form;
  7. Other documents if necessary.

Applications usually take about 1 week to process. The Residence Permit is similar to an ordinary VISA except it grants you unlimited exit and entry during its validity.

Persons applying for the Residency Permits are required to undergo “physical examinations” that will cost them between 600 RMB to 1000 RMB. On top of that, fasting is also required. Processing of the residency permit may take at least 2 weeks.

Flying Chalks’ tips: Remember to set extra time out for visa application just in case! Also note that China’s Public Holidays will affect the processing time of your visa! On top of that, remember that X-type visa holders are not permitted to work!

Zhe Jiang Uni has many campuses. For my 4 month exchange in China I stayed at the Zi Jin Gang campus. It is a really nice place! So much food and things to explore around there. The people there are quite polite too as it isn't a city like place. If you are into scenery, you can visit XiHu (West Lake) which has a really nice atmosphere, especially dawn and dusk. If you feel more adventurous you could climb the famous Huang Shan (Yellow Mountain). The view there is just incredible. A group of us spent 3 days on the mountain. It was an experience I would never forget! Just next to the place we were staying at was a back alley that led to a a place across a bridge that we called 'Hou Jie'. It sold a wide variety of food and dessert ranging from tradition Chinese food to western and Korean food It was a good experience overall and I wouldn't mind going back to eat the good food and take in the scenery of the place again!

My international exchange programme to Zhejiang University was a great learning journey where I learnt so much about China's culture and also, met a lot of international friends. The global exposure trained me to be an adaptable and independent individual. I would recommend students to go if they are looking for a reasonably priced exchange programme with interesting experiences.
