Accommodation (UBC Housing):
As rent can be quite expensive in Vancouver, you should consider applying for University of British Columbia campus housing though spots are limited. It is an especially good option for first-year undergraduate students as they are more likely to get a place. UBC housing costs around $8,000-$10,000 for two terms and there are different options available to suit your preferences (shared housing, single housing etc.). Some residences come with mandatory meal plans. For information on campus housing and eligibility, click UBC Housing Information.
If you want to rent your own place, there are some considerations to keep in mind for UBC off campus housing:
Finding a Place
Craigslist is a good place to start, but be on your guard for scams. Always make sure to go take a look at the apartment in person, ask questions, and read any agreements thoroughly before signing them.
Security Deposit
Landlords can ask for up to half of one month’s rent as a security deposit. This deposit is per apartment and not per person living there. This is to be returned to you after you move out as long as there are no damages to the place.
Flying Chalks’ tips:
- You should inspect a place carefully before you rent and point out any damages to the landlord so that you do not get charged for them.
- The deposit has to be requested at the start of your stay.
- You are not liable to pay for damages that are a reasonable part of normal wear and tear.
Tenancy Agreement and Disputes
Make sure you read the agreement carefully before signing. In particular, take note of your lease period.
If you are unfortunate enough to run into problems with your landlord, you can file a dispute at the Residential Tenancy Branch. You will likely have to attend a hearing with your landlord (usually over the phone) where a representative will decide your case. If you want to learn more about your tenancy rights, click here.

Short term stay at UBC:
For UBC international students or UBC exchange students, if your family or friends visit you during your school term and going to stay for few days. You can consider hotels near UBC or UBC hostel such as Pacific Spirit Hostel (Pacific Spirit Hostel Information) or West Coast Suites (West Coast Suites Information), as these hostels are located on UBC campus.
