University of Hong Kong

Evolving from the former Hong Kong College of Medicine which was instituted in 1887, the University of Hong Kong was formally founded in 1911. From its modest beginnings of only two departments, the University has grown to embrace almost all major areas of teaching and research and is currently one of the top Asia universities in the region. Today, the university has a student population of over 15,000, including 9,415 undergraduates, 5,081 postgraduates and 1,024 international students.

Course registration process:

Exchange students are required to indicate the courses they wish to take in their application for admissions. Course selection status will be confirmed by email or upon their registration at HKU before start of the semester. Students are allowed to change their course selection within the official add/drop period which is typically the first 2 weeks of each semester.

For daily necessities and groceries, there is a “Park’n Shop supermarket” located on campus at the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre, as well as the “Centennial Campus Supermarket” at the Cheng Yu Tung Tower.

For shopping:

The streets of Mong Kok and Kwai Chung Plaza are popular shopping places with its wide variety of fashion at prices friendly to the not-so-deep pockets of students. 

Should you be willing to travel a little further, Shenzhen in neighbouring mainland China is also one of the favoured choices!

Accessibility

University of Hong Kong is most commonly accessed via the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) by alighting at the “HKU” station (MTR Island Line).

Getting from Hong Kong International airport to HKU:

By Airport Express and MTR

Take the Airport Express to Hong Kong station. Transfer to the Island Line (Central station) and head for HKU station

The entire journey is estimated to take about 40 minutes.

By Taxi

Taxi is by far the most convenient way of getting from the airport to the campus (especially when you have lots of luggage) but is also the most expensive. You can get a taxi outside the Arrival Hall of the airport.
The ride will cost you approximately HK$50-70.

I really enjoyed my time at HKU. I managed to get a room in one of the halls, which allowed me to experience hall life and make more local friends. 70% of the students in my hall were locals. We also had hall meetings every week which allowed us to interact with them. My hall was only a 30 minute walk from campus, or a 10 minute bus ride. There was no supermarket near the hall. However, Wellcome in Westwood near campus has almost everything you need.

HKU has a vibrant campus life. Student life is very active, which was an eye opening experience. The students are very friendly, but they are also highly competitive. There is a strong result-oriented culture there. I managed to take quite some modules that catered to my interests outside of my major. Exchange has given me a more global perspective on life. It even made me consider working overseas in the future.

I was interested in doing my exchange in Hong Kong because I wanted to educate myself on Hong Kong’s financial law. It was especially relevant as Hong Kong is a major global financial hub. Teaching in the university is mainly lecture-based, which was different from the seminar-based teaching in my home university. However, I enjoyed most of my modules and learnt a lot during my time in HKU. I also attended additional seminars organised by the Asian Institute of Financial Law, which were highly informative.
