You will need to apply for a residence permit to stay in Sweden. You can do this online here. Before filling out the application, make sure that you have electronic copies of the following:
- Copies of the pages in your passport which show your personal details, the period of validity and whether you have permission to live in countries other than Singapore
- Letter of Acceptance from Uppsala University
- Proof that you will have comprehensive medical insurance coverage throughout your stay in Sweden
- Bank statement in English showing transactions of the last 6 months is required. This is mainly to show that you have the means to support yourself during your stay – a common rule of thumb is to have SEK 450 per day per person (SGD 71). More details can be found here. The amount maybe lesser if you have already paid for housing or are living with a friend/family. Alternatively, you can also show proof of another source of funding (e.g. a scholarship, a loan, or an education grant).
When your application has been approved, you will receive an email to collect a document at the Swedish embassy. The document you will receive is not a residence permit. In order to get the permit itself you will need to go to the Migration Board once you are in Sweden.
The process is quite painless and very efficient. Processing time is around 2 weeks.

Flying Chalks’ tip: On your online application, make sure that you fill in a Swedish address even if you still don’t know your exact address at the time of application. If you put the address in your home country, you will be made to collect your residential pass from the neighboring town. With a Swedish address, they can update it to the right one when you are there and deliver it to you by mail or send it to Uppsala University for collection.
