Accommodation:
Utrecht University partners with SSH, a housing organization, to offer flats and rooms on a first-come, first-serve basis. These options range from 310-750 Euros per month, and vary greatly in size and quality.
Information about the procedure will be sent to students after acceptance. Visit https://www.sshxl.nl/en/utrecht-university to see what’s being offered, but be prepared to search for your own apartment as the SSH options get booked up very quickly.
Finding an apartment in the center of Utrecht can be tricky, but using Facebook groups to find other students makes the process easier. Join the Utrecht University Exchange Students Facebook page to find other students looking for an apartment, or try https://kamernet.nl
If you find an apartment you are interested in, contact the landlord or current tenants. Sometimes Dutch students will select a roommate by inviting potential candidates to their home for an “interview” to see who is the best fit. Check out this resource from KamerNet on different types of living arrangements in the Netherlands.
Avoid scams by following these simple rules:
- Never pay for a room before you see it in person.
- Always meet face-to-face with the home-owner or landlord (or via Skype).
- Make sure you have a written rental agreement that you understand.
- Do not provide a copy of your ID before meeting with the landlord and signing your lease.
- Expect to spend anywhere between 300-500 Euros a month for a room in a shared apartment. Consider living a little outside of the city center for more affordable living—Utrecht Overvecht and Leidsche Rijn are accessible by bike or a 5-minute train ride from Utrecht Central Station.
