Singapore Institute of Mangement (SIM) 

The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Group was set up in 1964 and currently consists of three entities, namely SIM University (UniSIM), SIM Global Education and SIM Professional Developments. However, only SIM University (UniSIM) and SIM GE are catered to tertiary students. In 2017, the university was split, with the breakaway being re-branded as Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).

Located west of Singapore, it offers several programmes ranging from doctoral and professional development to diploma programmes. Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) also trains executives and provides training programmes to help companies achieve effectiveness in various fields.

SIM Global Education (SIM GE)

Located right next to Ngee Ann Polytechnic, SIM Global Education has been picked as the best private institute by AsiaOne People’s choice Awards 2015 along with various other awards for the 7th year running (as of 2015).

SIM GE offers both full-time and part-time high quality, holistic education with transnational academic programmes from universities from the US, UK and Australia.

SIM University (UniSIM)

SIM University (UniSIM) is a privately-funded university dedicated to providing tertiary students, working adults, homemakers and retirees a chance to upgrade pathways by acquiring more skills, knowledge and competitiveness.

Similar to SIM GE, SIM University (UniSIM) offers both full-time and part-time degree courses and is located next to Ngee Ann Polytechnic as well.

SIM PD provides solutions such as training programmes to professional and corporate developments for organisations in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific Region. It is voted by HR practitioners as the “preferred Management Training Firm and “Preferred sales Training Firm” awards.

SIM University (UniSIM) Programmes are only available for:

• Singaporeans or Permanent Residents (PR) with at least 3 passes in H3 content subjects
• Singaporeans with diploma from a local polytechnics with a O-level pass for English
• International Baccalaureate school
• NUS High School (or equivalent)

SIM University (UniSIM) classes are usually held in Block C.

Its full-time students must go for an overseas stint during their studies, which may include a work attachment programme or a service learning project.

SIM Global Education (SIM GE)

United States (US)

University of Buffalo (UB)

University of Buffalo, the State University of New York, is one of the top 100 American universities. Founded in 1846, UB has grown to from a small medical school to one of the largest, most comprehensive public research institution.

Students are expected to complete load of 12-15 credits each semester. Students manage their class schedules themselves – should students choose to drop or resign from any module, or fails to fulfil the required number of credits, they may take more than 3 years to complete their studies.

Only upon completion of the required number of credit points (with a minimum overall and UB GPA of 2.0), will students be awarded the degree.

Grades are determined by class tests, assignments, projects, presentations and final exam scheduled throughout the semester.

Lectures are delivered in smaller lecture halls that accommodate approximately 100 students. Students are also required to attend tutorials held in small groups of 20. Both lectures and tutorials are usually 1.5hrs long.

Flying Chalk’ tip: Amongst the transnational programmes offered by SIM GE, SIM-UB is one of the most expensive programmes.

Australia

SIM-The University of Sydney

Ranking #3 in Australian University Ranking 2015/16, the University of Sydney is Australia’s first university that has an international reputation for outstanding teaching. SIM-UOS offers programmes related to Nursing. Students who complete this programme will gain insights to the role of nursing as well as enhanced skills for critical thinking, and developed greater clinical and professional leadership. Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) is one of Australia’s earliest and largest tertiary institutions. Founded in 1887, RMIT has an international reputation for excellence in professional and vocational education for technology, design and enterprise. RMIT ranks #14 amongst the top universities in Australia, in the Australian University Ranking.

United Kingdom (UK)

The University of Warwick

The University of Warwick ranks #10 in UK and top 50 in the world in the UK top Universities 2015/16. The University of Warwick is part of the prestigious Russell Group of UK universities.

University of Warwick (SIM) offers masters and postgraduate specialty programmes from these fields:

All modules are delivered by academics from The University of Warwick and assessed by continuous assessment coursework where students will be required to apply concepts and tools in solving company problems. A 100% attendance is required for programmes under The University of Warwick.

University Of Birmingham (UOB)

The University Of Birmingham (UOB), is a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group of UK Universities. On top of that, UOB ranks top 100 in the world and #15 in the UK top Universities 2015/16. Birmingham’s academic staffs are renowned for their world-class research and excellence in teaching. With 31% of academic staff from overseas, students will be able to expect exposure from a diverse background, learning not only academically.

University of Birmingham (SIM) is fully taught by Birmingham academics – lectures from the home universities are invited into Singapore to deliver lectures. Classes are divided into smaller groups of approximately 100 students to ensure productivity however, for other programmes such as “Business Management with communications”, students will be further divided into smaller groups of less than 20 to complete projects.

Both Local and International students are required to attend 100% of classes.

University of London (International Programmes)

On top of being most prestigious, the University Of London (UOL) is also one of the oldest universities in the UK. UOL is made up of 17 colleges including elite universities – University College London (UCL, UK #3), King’s College London (KCL, UK #5), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE, UK #8). University Of London (SIM) offer programmes from different academic levels. Programmes range from Business, Management, Economics, Accounting, Finance, Banking, International Relations, Politics, Mathematics, IT and Computing. The full list of courses can be found here!

The average teacher to student ratio is 1:100. Doctors and Professors who specialized in the various fields of study are invited to deliver lectures in large halls. The list of lecturers can be found here!

Depending on programmes, modules are assessed differently. Some programmes are assessed with assignments, class tests and preliminary exams while others are assessed with only continuous assessment and end-of-year exam.

The University of Sheffield

Dating back to more than a hundred years and built on Sheffield’s own aspirations and financial support, the University of Sheffield ranks #16 in the UK top Universities 2015/16 and top 100 globally.

University of Sheffield (SIM) offers only Business Programme: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Accounting and Financial Management. The average teacher to student ratio is 1:50.

Grades are awarded based on a combination of assessments, and module examinations. Some modules will be graded on end-module examinations alone. End-semester examinations are normally held in November and April.

Completion of 120 credits (passing all module credits) is required to advance from Year 2 to Year 3. Do note that modules in Year 3 carry more weight than those in year 2.

University of Southampton

With history dating back to as early as 1867, and being part of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group of Universities, the University of Southampton is internationally renowned for its pioneering research and academic excellence, ranking #17 in the UK top Universities 2015/16 and top 100 hundred universities globally (top 1% globally).

University of Southampton (SIM) offers only Business Programme: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Marketing that allow students to master marketing skills, principles, concepts, approaches as well as put them to practice.

A 100% attendance is required by University of Southampton. Grades are assessed by a combination of coursework and examinations, both individual and group-based.

University of Stirling

The University of Stirling is one of the top 50 universities in the UK top Universities 2015/16 ranking. Its programmes are designed to give students transferable skills, personal qualities and relevant work experiences sought by employers.

It is rated as first in Scotland, for sports facilities according to 2015 Timers Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

Assessments are graded based on combination of coursework and exams. Final exams are normally held in December and May.

The University of Manchester (Manchester Business School)

The University of Manchester is part of the prestigious Russell Group of universities and is highly respected among academic and business communities. With more than 180 years of history, the University of Manchester ranks #7 in the UK top Universities 2015/16.

University of Manchester (SIM) only offers part-time programmes hence international students will not be eligible for it. The full list of programmes offered by SIM-University of Manchester can be found here!

The average teacher to student ratio is 1:90. Lectures are delivered by Manchester Business School Academics while seminars are facilitated by local seminar individuals. A 100% attendance is compulsory for all lectures and seminars.

Core modules are normally assessed by written exam or a combination or coursework and written exam, every 2 monthly.

Course registration process:

Programme Registrations are done through SIM GE’s website. As different universities have different application dates, it is important to mark these dates onto your calendar. Some universities such as UOL, have 2 intakes per year.

Flying Chalks’ tip: Do check the “international students’ admission criteria” for the different universities as it usually varies with universities and programmes. Should you not meet the criteria, you may have to take up bridging courses before the term actually begins. Interviews by the programme Director and/or Programme Faculty may be required for some programmes.

Attendance policy:

Local students are required to have minimum 75%-80% attendance while international students are required to attend a minimum of 90% as mandated by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA).

However, to be eligible for examinations, a 100% attendance is required by some universities.

Singapore Institute of Management (UniSIM)’s newly established Multi-purpose complex covers approximately 4,970 square metres. SIM’s block D houses a wide selection of facilities for all students, ranging from an indoor sports hall/ basketball court, performing arts theatre, tennis courts, dance studios and athletes gym.

FoodClique
Foodclique offers a wide range of cuisines, from Korean, Indonesian, Vegetarian, to that of Western and Chinese at low fares.  On top of that, Dim Sums and fritters can be found within the snack stalls.

Foodnote
Located right opposite FoodClique, Foodnote is a Halal-certified restaurant that offers a range of delicacies as well, from local cuisine such as Chicken Rice, western to cookies and refreshing beverages like Each a Cup (Bubble Tea).

GrabnGo
Due to time constraints between classes (only 30 minutes break between classes), or 10 minute break during lessons, GrabnGo is the to-go place to pick up munchies.

Foodfest
Foodfest serves a variety of cuisines ranging from Muslim food, Mee Siam, to Indian Cuisine, Nasi Briyani, Chinese Laksa economical Bee Hoon and sandwiches.

BURP
BURP provides a well-balanced selection of food such as hearty soup, salads, wraps and sandwiches (similar to subway) and yoghurt (similar to llaollao).

Located at Block C level 1:

Starbucks
For a quick pick-me-up, Starbucks sits at the ground floor of Block C. The ground-to-ceiling windows provide students with a change in environment as compared to the windowless lecture and seminar halls. Unfortunately, Starbucks SIM does not offer student privileges and is usually not conducive for studying due to crowding and loud chatter.

Campus transportation:

It is easy to get around the SIM University (UniSIM) campus. All you’ll ever need are your trustworthy pair of legs!

SIM GE is so much more than just books, exams and qualifications. It houses one of the most vibrant student life experiences both within and external to class rooms. Ranging from career, leadership and skills development courses, internship, global learning, summer abroad programmes to clubs, communities and student councils.

Orientation program:

Upon registration with SIM GE University and before course commencement, students will be welcomed with a mandatory “orientation week” that consists of programme orientations and university orientation.

For example:
Day1: Compulsory attendance for mass UOB briefing for students from UOB Business Suite
Day2: Compulsory attendance for students from UOB Business Management programme and Business Management with International Business programme.
Day3: Compulsory attendance for UOB Business Management with Communications
Day4&5: (optional) SIM-UOB orientation that involves all SIM-UOB students where games will be held.

Class Representatives are typically picked during one of these days.

Student clubs:

During the orientation week or sometimes within the first two weeks of school, CCA fairs will be held to introduce SIM GE’s student councils and clubs. SIM GE has over 70 clubs and student councils all of which can be categorised under (in descending popularity):

Leadership and Development (Student Councils)

One of the more popular clubs in SIM GE, the student councils are formed to represent and meet the needs of the students as well as provide opportunities to lead and be part of a holistic comprehensive community.

Student councils are categorised based on the respective universities (RMIT council, UB Council, UOB council, UOL Council and UOW Council). These student councils generally host events such as Halloween night etc.

Sports

Sports clubs cater to the recreational needs of every individual, especially competitive-spirited persons. Amongst the sports clubs available at Singapore Institute of Management (UniSIM), water sports such as Canoe, Canoe Polo, Dragon Boat, Water Polo and Wakeboarding are more popular amongst students. However, in order to qualify, members would have to undergo intensive trainings. Apart from water sports, clubs such as Ultimate Frisbee, Floorball and Netball are amongst the popular ones.

The Arts and Culture Clubs at Singapore Institute of Management (UniSIM) specialises in dance, music, cultural development, photography, stage management and other exciting activities such as Anime and Gaming Club, Guitar Club, Salsa En Soul.

Special Interests

Singapore Institute of Management (UniSIM)’s Special Interest clubs are clubs and societies formed in response to students’ enthusiasm. In other words, you can start a club of your own if you have sufficient numbers!

One of the more prestigious clubs is AIESEC - the largest youth-run organisation that creates opportunities to gain international experiences by connecting young leaders of the next generation with impactful professionals and learning environments.

University events:

Singapore Institute of Management (UniSIM) is a vibrant campus that hosts several events throughout the year, some of which organised by SIM Students ad communities themselves.

Once students are registered as a student of SIM University, they will automatically be notified of upcoming events through SIM’s student portal (SIMconnect), student email or SIM’s News and Events tab.

More often than not, bazaars, fleas and other activities will be held at the area right in front of the SIM campus Bus stop as well as the pond area selling outfits, laptop sleeves, Ramly Burgers, Churros as well as food offered only in “night markets” (Pasar Malam).

At SIM University, not a day passes by without activities along Block B level 1 and Block A’s atrium.
On some days, students will also be seen going around school inviting peers to sign up for Zouk night out!

For food:

Around the campus, there are many restaurants, eateries, fast food restaurants and shopping malls with food stalls where you can find a variety of cuisines!

1. Head over to Ngee Ann Polytechnic for more variety of choices if you have time! Ngee Ann Polytechnic is just across the road from Singapore Institute of Management (SIM).
   Do look out for:
   • Campus’s best Ayam Panggang from MUNCH – located at block Seventy3 near the bus stop
   • The legendary Kaki Fuyong from the Japanese stall
   • Chicken Rice set that is value for money at Makan Place
   • Henry Western, Waffle with Ice-Cream, and Cupplets Café located at Poolside
   • For quick pick-me-ups, the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf are other options aside from Starbucks.
      
2. After class, you can also head down to Beauty World Centre, Lorong Kilat or Bukit Timah food centre for more choices! Taking bus services 52, 61, 75 and 184 will bring you right next to Shell station and within walking distance to these food places.
3. There are cafes and eateries located along Bukit Timah Rd/ Dunearn Rd as well. Bus services 74, 151 and 154 will bring you there.
4. From the bus stop opposite SIM Campus, take bus service 61 towards Holland Village (the home of bars, cafes and famous local delicacies). 
5. Bus services 52 and 154 will take you to Clementi Central where Clementi Mall is located.

For nightlife and entertainment:

  • For nightlife and entertainment near Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), Holland Village is the to-go place if you are in search for live music and bars. Bus service 61 from the bus stop opposite SIM campus will take you there.
  • Apart from Holland Village, you can take the Downtown Line towards Telok Ayer MRT. Across the street from Telok Ayer MRT is Club Street that links up to Cross Street and Ann Siang Hill where an alcove of bars and restaurants can be found.
  • Closer to Ann Siang Hill and Club Street is Tanjong Pagar Rd where more nightlife and entertainment can be found. Some Asia’s Top few restaurants such as Restaurant Andre (#3), Burt Ends (#14) and Tippling Club (#31) can be found there. Tippling Club, apart from being one of Asia’s Top 50 restaurants, is also 2015’s award-winning bar.

For daily necessities and groceries:

Apart from the mom-and-pop shops and convenience stores strewn around the area, do check out these stores for daily necessities and groceries:

• NTUC Fairprice, Giant Supermarkets, Giant Hypermarkets (Tampines), Cold Storage, “Sheng Shiong” and “Marketplace”.
• For housewares, furniture or electrical appliances, check out IKEA outlets, Courts, Japan Home, Nova, V.Hive and Home Fix!

Flying Chalks' recommendation:
The supermarket closest to SIM Campus is located at Clementi Central, a bus ride away. Bus services 52 and 154 will take you there.
However, basic necessities can also be found at the Shell station closes to SIM Campus.

For shopping:

Head down to the heart of Singapore – ORCHARD! It is a paradise for all shopaholics out there. From clothes to shoes, bags to accessories, there is definitely something out there for you!

Starting from ION Orchard shopping mall, you can go via underground walkways to other malls like Wisma Atria, Ngee Ann City, Wheelock Place and keep walking towards to *Scape, 313@Somerset, Orchard Central and Dhoby Ghaut!

Flying Chalks’ recommendation:

The shopping haven – Bugis Street is easily accessible via the downtown or east west line especially if you are on a tight budget. It is also one of the best shopping places in Singapore offering the latest and trendiest fashion at affordable prices. 

Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) is located along Clementi Road, and is directly accessible only via bus services 52, 61, 74, 75, 151, 154, 184.

The closest MRT stations to SIM University are Clementi MRT, Dover MRT, King Albert Park Station and Beauty World MRT.

Getting from Changi Airport to your Accommodation:

Private Pickup Services (Limousine and Large Taxis)

If you have a larger group, private pick-up services are available from the 24-hour Ground Transport Desks located at the arrival halls of all Changi Airport Terminals.

The rates are as follow:

4-seater limousine: SGD 55.00* per departure from airport
7-seater large taxi: SGD 60.00* per departure from airport

Taxi Services

Although taxi is the most comfortable and convenient mode of transport (especially when you have lots of luggage), it also the most expensive. Taxi services can be acquired from the Arrival Halls of any airport terminal. Fares are metered and there is an additional Airport surcharge for all trips originating from the Airport: 

Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) is located approximately 30km away from the Airport therefore, the basic cost for taking a Taxi from the Airport to SIM University will typically cost around SGD 25 to SGD 37, depending on the time of pick up.

Journey durations range from 30 minutes to 45minutes depending on traffic conditions. With good traffic conditions (off-peak hours), journey to SIM University usually take about 35 minutes.

By Train (Mass Rapid Transit, MRT)

Taking the MRT is the most affordable option to get around Singapore. Travelling from Changi Airport to the heart of Singapore requires only less than an hour!
Rides can be paid through a stored-value EZ-Link Card which can be purchased from ticketing counters in train stations.

Otherwise, single ride tickets can be purchased at all train stations.

Directions (to city):

All the trains and gantries at the stations are luggage-friendly. From the Arrival Hall, head for Changi Airport MRT station located at Terminals 2 & 3. Then take the train towards Tanah Merah interchange.
The last train at Changi Airport Station towards Tanah Merah Station leaves at 11.18pm. Transfer to the westbound train towards Joo Koon at Tanah Merah station.

Directions (to SIM):

The most convenient way is to take the train from Tanah Merah Station to Clementi Station (also on the East-West line). Alight and transfer to bus services 52 or 154.

By Bus

If you’re heading to the city, take public bus service 36/36A to the city. It is estimated to cost $2.50 and takes about an hour to get to the city via bus. You can pay using a stored-value EZ-Link Card (purchased at Changi Airport train station or from any Changi Recommends store) or by cash in exact amount.
