Hanyang University
Established in 1939, Hanyang University was founded as an engineering institute based on the principles: “Application of Knowledge” and “Love in Deed”. It is a South Korea university accredited by the IES. To date, Hanyang University is considered as one of the top ranking universities in South Korea and one of the most prestigious universities in Seoul. It now has 23 colleges and 15 graduate schools.

Hanyang University offers 3 ways in which International students can study in South Korea.
1. International Exchange Programme

International Students will be provided with a 4-week opportunity to participate in up to 3 courses out of the 100 course choices. On top of that, at least field trips, excursions and cultural programmes will also be organised for the students in the Hanyang University Summer programme!

Flying Chalks’ tip: Do note that even for classes indicated as being taught in English, professors may choose to teach in Korean instead for various reasons (own preference, cater to the English standards of Korean students etc). It is advisable to check out the classes at the start of the semester, and plan more course options as a backup plan.
Courses:
1. International Exchange Programme
Korean language courses
3 levels of Korean language courses (introductory L1, introductory L2 and intensive core) are available for International students to register.
Introductory L1 is normally held twice a week for 2 hours. You will learn basic Korean language (Hangeul, 한글) skills for basic communication – self introduction, food orders, purchases, time telling etc. This course is worth 3 credits upon completion (grades F to A+) and is held after 18:00 during the fall and spring semesters.
Introductory L2 is for students who have completed L1, and wish to continue non-intensive Korean studies or otherwise have existing knowledge already.
Intensive Core Students’ knowledge will be assessed and ranked based on 6 different levels. This course is worth 13 credits upon successful completion (grades F to A+). The course will commence in September during the fall semester or March, during the spring semester. Classes will be held for 5 days a week with 4 hours each day. Exchange students will only be eligible for afternoon class (14:00 – 18:00).

2. Hanyang International Summer School (HISS)
Hanyang International Summer School offers a wide variety of courses ranging from different fields namely
- Art and Design;
- Communications and Media;
- Economics and Business;
- Education;
- Engineering;
- Humanities;
- International Studies;
- Korean Studies and Language;
- Science and Math and
- Social Studies.
All offered courses will be 3 hours long, taught from Mondays to Thursdays, over the course of 15 days. They are worth 3 credits except Taekwondo that is worth 1 credit.
All English-taught HISS courses will be led by international professors invited by Hanyang University.

Course registration process:
1. International Exchange Programme
Course registration are done through an online portal where students are required to login with their credentials. Each course offered has limited seats hence registrations are based on a “first-come, first-serve” basis.

Flying Chalks’ tip:
- While professors are usually more understanding towards exchange students’ demands, do not bet all your hopes on it! Hanyang University Summer School would be no different!
- As Korean websites tend to require certain plug-ins not used in other parts of the world, it would be good to use Internet Explorer which supports these plug-ins. Browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox may not support the plug-ins needed for the websites to run.
Attendance policy:
Both HISS and International Exchange programmes require students to clock at least 70% attendance for passing grades. Information on the leave of absence can be found here!
Credit system in Hanyang University:
- 1 credit = 15-16 contact hours.
However, different professors may have different attendance polices for students to follow.
You can expect to receive your course transcripts approximately 1 month after the end of each course through your home university, via normal mail (no charges applicable).
Every additional transcript will be charged at US$20 and will be mailed via express mail.
Hanyang University’s 2 campuses (Seoul campus and ERICA campus) are made up of 23 colleges. Its Seoul campus covers a 509,394m2 area while ERICA campus covers an area of 1,312,815m2

Olympic Gymnasium
With a national reputation of “largest indoor college facility”, Hanyang’s Olympic Gymnasium is seven storeys high and made up of state-of-the-art facilities ranging from training courts, dance rehearsal floors, practice areas. It is commonly used for sports activities, competitions and intramural events.

The total seating capacity of all the libraries at Hanyang University is 8,500. By constantly expanding and improving their collections and facilities, Hanyang University aims to provide useful materials to meet the needs of intellectual and academic pursuits. Industrial Science Library

Food on campus:
Eateries within and outside Hanyang University are aplenty and may be tough for Hanyangians to decide what to eat! Cafes are normally places that serves the best food but canteens (or dining halls) are generally cheaper.
The canteens in Ecology building and Hanyang Plaza (Seoul Campus) are the ones that are more popular.

Located on the 3rd floor of Hanyang Plaza in Seoul Campus, the canteen is known to offer the cheapest meal on campus! A typical Korea meal Baek-ban will cost you approximately KRW 1,500 – KRW 2,000. Other dishes like Pork culet, Bibimbap will cost you around KRW 3,000.
Hanyang Plaza’s peak hours are around 11:30am to 1:30pm in lunch and 5:30pm to 6:30pm in supper. Click here to find out more!Located on the 2nd floor of the Community Center in ERICA Campus is Lunch Cok. This is also another canteen that boast its low prices in the campus. Meal prices starts at about KRW 3,000. Its operating hours are 11:30am to 2:00pm and 5:30pm to 8:50pm. Click here to find out more!
Campus transportation:
There is no transportation available within the campus. You will have to climb the hill yourself so make sure to train well before your exchange!
You can expect to see CCA booths, flea markets and random welfare pack distributions on Hanyang University’s vibrant campus!
Orientation program:
You will be welcomed by Hanyang University through a mandatory one or two-day orientation program. Apart from the usual curriculum-related briefings, you can also expect games and performances to make the entire session a really entertaining one!
During the orientation programme, you will have to prove that you have purchased health coverage by submitting the Health Insurance Certificate (if you have not done so before arrival). Otherwise, you will be made to purchase one during the orientation which will cost you about KRW 140,000 for 6 months or KRW 200,000 for 12 months.
Health Check: Students who are not able to prove that they are tested negative for Tuberculosis (TB) will have to be tested within 30 days of arrival at South Korea; it will not be chargeable. You will be briefed on this during the orientation as well. More information here!

Hanyang University has its own buddy program where you will be paired with a local Hanyang student that can help you better integrate into life in Korea!
Student clubs:
Hanyang University houses more than 100 clubs and activities combined on its Seoul and ERICA Campus.
Club invitation events are normally held for freshmen to register and participate. During this event, some clubs such as the Band clubs, Dance Clubs, Drama Clubs and Choir clubs will put up performances for the school.
Student Council (Division of International Studies, DIS)
The DIS Students Council is an organization for DIS students, led and run by DIS students! Multiple events are organized by the student council to help DIS students ease into the new environment, university life as well as provide aid in enhancing their experiences. Some of the events include membership training, DIS day and the graduation ceremony.

The Central Clubs
- Seoul Campus has 79 Central Clubs that is made up of religious clubs, physical activities, Liberal Arts, Literature, Social Science, Exhibition, Religion and Academics.
- ERICA Campus has a total of 55 clubs covering 7 fields namely Public Service, Religion, Academics, Liberal Arts, Arts, Physical Activity and Ball-Game Activity!
College Clubs and Small Groups
There are approximately 80 college clubs in Hanyang University in total. These clubs bring students with common interests and thoughts together sharing close relationships with one another.
“Small Groups” are targeted to students of individual college divisions encouraging deeper and more serious conversations than in college clubs.
Colorful Clubs at HYU
Adventurous clubs such as The Montaineering Club, The Yatch Club, the Young Hanyang, The Table, Sarang-Handae and Rooters make up this group. Young Hanyang is one of the more popular clubs as it searches for and features parties and events for the students to partake in. University events:
As a University that thrives for a holistic education, Hanyang University provides its students with a vibrant campus! Several event are being hosted through the year. Two of the main events are held in May and October, in both Seoul Campus and ERICA campus:
- Haeng-dang-je and Ae-han-je of Seoul Campus and
- Byul-mang-je and Milmool Festival of ERICA Campus.
Both the Haeng-dang-je and Byul-mang-je festivals are hosted by the General Student Association to commemorate the founding of Hanyang University. These events are university-wide, last for 3 days, and begins around 15 May.
Besides the festival in May, Hanyang University also holds University-wide sports events in October. This is when intramural competitions are organized by the General Student Association.

Since Hanyang University is located near Wangsimni station (a transfer station for 4 subway lines & a 10 minutes’ walk from Hanyang), you can expect to find shops and food places easily accessible!
For food:
Although the neighbourhood where Hanyang is located in can be rather quiet, cafes and good food places can still be found in the vicinity. There is also a McDonalds is located right opposite Hanyang!

For daily necessities and groceries:
There is a big supermarket called the “E-Mart” located inside a large shopping complex built over Wangsimni station where you can get everything from groceries and pastries to electronics. There are also dozens of convenience stores strewn around the area.
For nightlife and entertainment:
There are a select few No-Rae-Bangs (Korean-style singing rooms), bars, pubs, and PC Gaming shops in the area.
Flying Chalks’ recommendations:
- If parties and nightlife aren’t your thing, Hanyang University is located 1 station away, or 15-20 minutes’ walk, to the Seoul Forest (on Seoul Forest station), one of the recommended tourist attraction that is made up of 5 different parks perfect for a morning/ evening exercise.
- Hongdae is a place famed for its nightlife and entertainment. It mainly caters to the younger, hipster crowd.
- Gangnam is another place famed for its nightlife and entertainment, which also received global recognition when Korean artiste Psy’s MV “Gangnam Style” went viral. As compared to Hongdae, it mainly caters to the working and more sophisticated crowd.
For shopping:
Although the area around Hanyang University can be quiet at times, many shopping areas can be easily accessible through Korea’s subway.
Flying Chalks’ recommendation:
- “Express Bus Terminal” is a highly popular place amongst locals and foreigners alike for shopping. The underground shopping features hundreds of shops with products at affordable prices. Having said that, you can always bargain for better prices!
- Dongdaemun is another highly popular shopping haven where you can literally shop till dawn! For serious shoppers, it is near impossible to finish the entire shopping area even in one full day :O
- Hongdae is not only known to be a great place for nightlife and entertainment. It is also an area that is known for shopping catered to the locals and foreign youths alike!
- Aside from the above listed areas, Myeongdong and Ewha University area (for clothes are shoes) are also two of the few where you can shop till you drop!
Getting from Incheon airport to Hanyang University:
Hanyang Pick-up service
Hanyang University offers its students an airport pick-up service. Students will receive an email regarding this programme after which registration will be required. Students will also be required to pay a service fee of between KRW35,000 - KRW60,000.

Bus (the most convenient mode of transportation)
Upon arrival at Incheon airport, bus tickets can be purchased at ticket booths located on the 1st floor, near exits 4 and 11 (outdoors), after exiting the arrival hall.
Purchase a bus ticket towards Wangsimni station (Route 6010).
It will cost you about KRW 15,000.

From here, you can either take the
- Train-subway from Wangsimni station (Line 2) and alight at Hanyang University (Line 2), Exit #2. This will cost you about KRW 1,250 (Transit Card) / KRW 1,350 (Ticket Fare) for a 2 minute train ride. OR
- Take a taxi to your final destination.

Train-Subway (All-stop train, cheapest alternative to bus)
From Incheon Airport, take the all-stop train on Airport Railroad, towards Seoul Station.
Alight at Hongik University Station and transfer to Line 2, towards Seongsu Station.
Hanyang University is located at Hanyang University Station (Exit #2, right at its doorstep).
The journey will take about 1.5 hours and cost about KRW 4,350 (ticket fare) or KRW 4,250 (with transit card).

Taxi
You can also take a taxi from Incheon airport to Hanyang University. You will receive an email with information regarding the University that contains its address.
It will cost you about KRW 70,000 for regular taxi and KRW 100,000 for deluxe. The journey will take about 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes).
