  1. Residence at Western

Exchange students accepted to Western will automatically receive a guaranteed offer of residence or be put on the waiting list, depending on availability. No official application is required. As there is a mandatory meal plan, staying on campus will usually be more expensive then off campus housing.

Room types & rates:
http://www.residenceatwestern.ca/rates.cfm#others

Assignment Priority: Students will have the chance to indicate their choice of residence, roommate, meal plan selections and other preferences, subject to availabilities.

Furnishing: Single-sized bed and bedding, closet, desk, desk lamp, chair, shelving unit, corkboard, waste and recycling bins.

Flying Chalks’ tip: Do note that students staying at Western Residences will also have to pay additional fees to subscribe for Internet service.

  1. Off campus housing

Many exchange students choose to stay off campus as it is relatively cheaper. Western provides Off-Campus Housing services where you can view rental listings and seek information and help with leasing. Rent can start from $200/month.

Off-Campus Housing Services website: http://offcampus.uwo.ca/

Western's Housing Mediation Services can also help to review your rental agreement for free.

Flying Chalks’ tips:

  • You should inspect a place carefully before you rent and point out any damages to the landlord so that you do not get charged for them.
  • You are not liable to pay for damages that are a reasonable part of normal wear and tear.
  • Note that the landlord may ask you to pay the first and last month’s rent upfront.
  • Garbage is not collected daily in London and you can only bring it out the night before collection day.

Ivey is a really great place. The case method may be a bit unusual and aggressive at the start, but you'll get used to it in a few lessons, and may even find yourself participating quite some. The campus is stunning and beautiful. The main campus is filled with historic buildings and the new Ivey campus is a modern fresh look for the campus. London is also a very beautiful and quiet city. Most of the population I saw were actually students at Western. I went in the winter, so it was really great being able to try out all the winter sports and activities that i would not be able to do otherwise. Make sure to go ice skating, skiing, snowboarding. Even driving on the snow-filled roads are an experience. Just make sure to keep safe and take care! It'll definitely be a blast in London. Academics-wise, just make sure to read up the cases before classes. Otherwise, it's really easy to get lost in the discussion and not really learn anything. :)

Ivey Business school, part of University of Western Ontario adopts the case-study method of teaching, similar to that of Harvard Business School. My professors and classmates were very friendly and enthusiastic, resulting in a very dynamic and engaging classroom experience. This was very different from my home university in Singapore. Although class participation was a big component of our grades, most classes had no mid terms or final examinations. Western students also embodied the work hard, play hard attitude and knew how to have a good time. I was fortunate enough to spend the winter term at Western and it was definitely and unforgettable experience. I really enjoyed trying out different snow activities such as snow tubing. During my time at Western, I was also paired up with a peer guide who was very willing to help and she even brought me shopping at Costco!

Western gave me a chance to experience a different culture. Classmates and people were nice and friendly. Time spent there was definitely worth it! Spending winter in Canada was a blast as well ????

Ivey was a really fun experience. The people were friendly and warm and the campus was gorgeous. Lessons placed tremendous emphasis on individual participation and were lively and interesting.
