University Of Salzburg Austria
Accommodation

Accommodation:

The university does not provide any accommodation and instead, recommends students to book apartments through the OEAD. The OEAD is an organization that leases offers 8 dormitory accommodations around Salzburg. These dormitory accommodations are leased from another company, Studentheim.

Flying Chalks tip:

For better rates and service, book directly through Studentheim. The OEAD can be somewhat challenging to deal with as they have limited opening hours and often are not able to provide support to students.

Room types & rates:

Prices differ greatly depending on the room type but are within the range of 265-410€, with the average being around 320€ per month. Upon applying for a room, you must pay a deposit of around 900€. A monthly 18€ administration fee and a one-off cleaning fee will then be deducted from your deposit after your stay. The cleaning fee differs depending on the dormitory but usually is no more than 100€.

The remaining of the deposit will be returned to you at the end of your stay, unless your room has been damaged during your stay. For this reason, you should take photos of every fault or scratch in your apartment before moving in.

Furnishing:

All apartments come with a desk, chair, bed frame, mattress and cupboard. Anything else, you are responsible to get it on your own – pillow, quilt, sheets, towels and all kitchenware.

The cheapest option is head to Ikea in Europark on your first day. If you cannot get to Ikea, try Kik, which is located in a few spots around Salzburg; its range of items is quite limited but just as cheap as Ikea. For better quality items, Leiner is a department store located in Salzburg Süd with a wider range of kitchenware but prices may be more expensive.

In each dormitory, you will have to pay 2€ per load for the washing machine and 1€ for the dryer. However, the dryer is quite weak and you may have to put your clothes through it twice or hang them out to dry in your room.

Best Apartments:

  • Haus Salzburg: Haus Salzburg, slightly north of the town is a beautiful apartment building offering only shared rooms and is a great budget option. It has a kitchen which you will share with the entire building. The kitchen is quite big but has very limited cupboard and fridge space allocated per room. The accommodation also has some really great common areas here which are perfect for meeting others and bringing friends over.
  • Haus Mozart: Haus Mozart is the most popular dorm and is often hard to get a room in. The location is quite far from the other dorms but prized for its accessibility; it is situated in-between the Old Town and railway station, with access to many buses connections. Haus Mozart is one of the newest and most expensive dormitories in Salzburg, offering one of the biggest rooms available.

  • Priesthausgasse: Priesthausgasse is in the perfect location, just two minutes’ walk from the Old Town but in a quiet area. You can get either shared or private rooms here, but will have to share the kitchen with everyone else. Unlike Haus Salzburg, the kitchen is very small and cooking can become problematic during peak dinner time. In the summer months, Priesthausgasse operates as a hotel and will provide you with bedding.

  • Franz Von Sales Kolleg (FSK): FSK is located in Salzburg Süd, an area where you will find most of the other exchange students living in. The bus-stop and supermarkets are just 5 minutes-walk away and the bus to university takes less than 10 minutes. You have the option of living in double rooms (2 beds in one room), a shared apartment (private room but share kitchen and bathroom with 3 others) or having a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom all to yourself. The living arrangements are some of the best and cheapest in Salzburg, with modern facilities and a full-time housekeeper. Living in the Süd also means you have the best weather; on average it is 3°C warmer than inner-Salzburg and it rains much less.

Flying Chalks’ recommendation: The private bedrooms in the shared apartment at Franz Von Sales are much bigger and provide a more comfortable option than living in double rooms.

Other dormitories popular with Exchange/Erasmus Students are the International Kolleg and Home4Students.
