VISA:

For nationals of EU and EEA member countries as well as Swiss nationals, students do not need VISAs or residence permits. However, for stays in Austria for more than 3 months, students will need to apply for a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheinigung) in Austria’s immigration office (Landeshaupmann, Magistrat, Bezirkshauptmannschaft) within 4 months of entry.

For non EU/EEA/Swiss nationals, students who are studying in Austria for less than 6 months will need either:

• A travel VISA C (“Schengen visa”) for stays in Austria and all other countries within the Schengen zone for a maximum of 90 days within 180 days (not necessary if you are a citizen of these countries)

• A residence VISA D for stays in Austria for at least 91 days up to 6 months maximum and stays within the Schengen zone for a maximum of 90 days during this period (not necessary if you are a Japanese national)

For students staying in Austria for more than 6 months, you have to apply for a residence permit for study purposes (Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende) in your country of residence before entry into Austria, after you have been confirmed admission to a university in the country.

For students who do not need a VISA to enter Austria, you may apply for and receive the residence permit from the Immigration Office in Austria.

• Apply for the VISA in your home country before you leave. Bizarrely, you cannot apply for your VISA in Salzburg and instead, must go to Ljubljana, Munich or Bratislava to apply. This is expensive, time-consuming, and requires you to wait around the embassy as the application process can take up to two days. Regardless, you will be asked to wait around the embassy for the entire day.

For Singapore Citizens:

Citizens of Singapore are entitled to 90 days of free travel within the Schengen area (most European countries including Austria). As your semester in Salzburg will most likely exceed this period, a Schengen VISA will be required.

Required documents:

• Confirmation of admission by the university,

• Completed and signed application form

• 2 passport photos

• Valid passport

• Proof of accommodation in Austria

• Copy of bank account details

There is also a 99€ fee to be paid at the time of application.
