Ewha Womans University South Korea
About School

Ewha Womans University

Ewha Womans University was established in 1886 to empower Korean women to free themselves from the feudalistic system. Having braved through countless national hardships and crisis, Ewha has grown to become the World’s largest women’s university with 140,000 graduates, 21,000 students and 14 colleges.

Although its students are all females, the university has an exception that accepts male students under the exchange program. It is well known that these male students are generally well-treated and very much delighted with their choice of studying at Ewha!

Academics

GPA requirement:

2.5 / 4.0

Language of instruction:

Korean, English

Flying Chalks’ tip: Do note that even for classes indicated as being taught in English, professors may choose to teach in Korean instead for various reasons (own preference, cater to the English standards of Korean students etc). It is advisable to check out the classes at the start of the semester, and plan more course options as a backup plan.

Courses:

More information on English-taught courses can be found here.

Korean language courses
Ewha offers an Academic Korean Program for all international students free of charge. This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Students interested in taking the course will be required to take the Korean Language Placement Test prior to the beginning of each semester.

Course registration process:

Registration for courses is via the Fastest-Fingers-First system on the start of the application date.

Flying Chalks’ tip: In most Korean universities, professors have the authority to accept students into their class even though it might appear as fully enrolled on the university’s online course registration system. All you have to do is to fill up a form, have the professor’s approval to register for the course, and submit it to the Academic Office.

While professors are usually more understanding towards exchange students’ demands, do not bet all your hopes on it!

Surrounding Environment

The Ewha area is a bustling university town where shops and activities are all catered to the needs and wants of the students in the vicinity. As with the fact that Ewha is a woman’s university, many of the shops there do specifically target females with their product or service offerings, promotions, and even shop interior designs.

For food:

The area plays host to dozens of restaurants, eateries, cafes, coffee chains, and also street food stalls.

Flying Chalks’ recommendation:

  • Amasvin Bubble Tea (아마스빈 버블티) is a bubble tea joint that offers a wide array of choices, great taste and value for money!
  • Al-chon (알촌) serves really delicious mixed rice topped with fish roe, all for less than USD $4!

    For nightlife and entertainment:

Students would usually head over to Sinchon (10 minutes’ walk away) where you can easily find No-Rae-Bangs (Korean-style singing rooms), bars, pubs, clubs, and PC Gaming shops all within a stone’s throw distance from one another in Sinchon. In addition, there is the “Megabox” shopping complex which has a cinema for movie-goers.

Ewha University is also a 25 minutes’ walk away, or 2 subway stations away from Hongdae – a place famed for its nightlife and entertainment.

    Flying Chalks’ recommendations:

    • Da-Mo-Toh-Ri (다모토리) is a Korean-style drinking joint in Sinchon that offers the perfect blend of highly affordable drinks, great atmosphere, and catchy music that is played at the right volume. It is a popular hangout for both local and foreign students alike, where friends and strangers come together to sing and even dance together!
    • Hongdae is a place famed for its nightlife and entertainment. It mainly caters to the younger, hipster crowd.
    • Gangnam is another place famed for its nightlife and entertainment, which also received global recognition when Korean artiste Psy’s MV “Gangnam Style” went viral. As compared to Hongdae, it mainly caters to the working and more sophisticated crowd.

    For daily necessities and groceries:

For daily necessities and groceries, there are “Daiso” outlets, “Lotte 999” mart near Lotteria, mom-and-pop shops, and dozens of convenience stores strewn around the area. Should you be willing to walk just a little further, there are also the “E-Mart”, “Lotte Mart” and “Homeplus” hypermarkets that sell everything from groceries to that of electrical appliances.

    For shopping:

The Ewha area itself is a heaven for most students with its fashion streets with shops that feature clothes, shoes and bags; countless skincare and cosmetic shops; as well as even a small shopping complex.

Ewha students also frequently flock over to Sinchon where there is the Uplex shopping complex, Hyundai Department Store, and various other shops such as the “Artbox” where you can purchase fancy stationery.

    Flying Chalks’ recommendation:

    • “Express Bus Terminal” is a highly popular place amongst locals and foreigners alike for shopping. This underground shopping features hundreds of shops with products at affordable prices. Having said that, you can always bargain for better prices!
    • Dongdaemun is another highly popular shopping haven where you can literally shop till dawn! For serious shoppers, it is near impossible to finish the entire shopping area even in one full day :O
    Accessibility

Should your final desired destination not be Seoul station, you can also take the All-stop train which is slightly slower but stops at several stations in between (56 minutes to Seoul station).

    Flying Chalks recommendation:
This option is highly recommended for students who seek a comfortable ride and yet not want to splurge on commuting! However, do note the train timings in order not to miss it.
First train (Express): 5.20am (runs in intervals of about 30-40minutes)

I chose to embark on my exchange with Ewha University for the safe and vibrant city! There is a Shinhan Bank located in school too, so it's really convenient. As the staffs were well prepared for the many student applicants, hiccups were almost negligible as the procedures were already in place. I would recommend opening an account with Citibank in Singapore (if you’re from Singapore) as it didn't require extra service fees when I withdrew cash and it was also easy to locate an ATM; no hassle! (:

If you are someone who's always hungry (like me), Sinchon has a number of shops and affordable eateries located just 10 minutes away, some even 24hrs! And if you love drinking and a life that never sleeps, Korea has it way cheaper than Singapore, especially in Hongdae!

The application for Credit Card is FOC but one useful tip to note is to bring some cash from your home country as the exchange rate is better there!

I would definitely recommend staying in Ewha'sInternational Dormitory since it’s located within campus and makes travelling to class real easy! Plus, everything from basic furniture, bed, cupboard, desk, a functional toilet, internet access, utility bills and even a mini-fridge are included within the dorm fees!

As a city campus, Ewha's surrounding area is vibrant! There are lots of shopping located (literally) outside campus on Ewha Street! An abundance of life but there are plenty of conducive areas for studying and chilling with friends as well!

I would definitely recommend the campus accommodation! It was a 2-person, ensuite room with study tables and Internet access. Pretty much everything was included for just SGD350, it was also very clean and better than expected but we were only allowed to arrive one day before orientation to settle in.

Ewha is located in town with lots of shopping surrounding the area. In addition, due to its favourable location, we only spent SGD60 per month on transport! The school also provides pick-up service to your accommodation but you have to sign up for it.
