Choosing a place to live is an essential part of your study abroad experience. Singapore offers a range of accommodation types to suit various needs and budgets. In this article, we'll explore the different options available for students in the Lion City.

Dormitories and Hostels

Due to Singapore's limited land area, many universities do not have dormitories. Instead, foreign students often opt for private student hostels, which serve as a more economical lodging choice. An example of such accommodation is the MDIS Hostel. Typically, student dormitories and hostels can cost between US$450 and $600 per month.

Public Apartments (HDB Flats)

Public apartments, more commonly known as HDB flats, are a popular accommodation choice. Interesting to note is that approximately 80% of Singapore's resident population lives in these flats, which are generally well-maintained and provide a local living experience. Depending on your budget and requirements, you can opt for a Master bedroom with an attached bathroom or a common room without a bathroom. The cost of renting a room in an HDB flat varies between US$500 and $800 per month, depending on the location and room type.

Private Apartments (Condominiums or “Condos”)

Private apartments, or Condominiums, often shortened to “Condos”, provide another choice. These gated communities come with security and a suite of facilities like swimming pools, gyms, and multipurpose courts, offering a luxurious lifestyle. Prices can range between US$700 and $1,000 per month, contingent on location and room type.

Studio Apartments and Private Houses

Studio apartments, while not as common, offer the most privacy. However, they come with a higher price tag, usually costing at least US$1,000 per month. Additionally, there are private houses with rooms for rent, which can cost between US$600 and $900 per month.
