One of the most common queries from international students heading to Australia is “How do I get Permanent Residency in Australia?” We’ll answer all your burning questions by covering the common pathways to permanent residency in Australia.

1. General Skilled Migration

The first pathway to permanent residency would be through the General Skilled Migration. You can apply for permanent residency if you have the qualifications or work experience related to the occupation list from the Australian government. Some examples include Aged Care Nurses, Marketing Specialists and Civil Engineers. Our top tip would be to consider a Degree that falls within the occupation list and allows for a pathway towards a graduate visa to gain work experience.

2. Business Ownership Experience

The second pathway would be through Business Ownership Experience. By owning a business in Australia, it allows individuals to gain the Subclass 890 Business owner visa which allows the business owner to stay in Australia. The individual needs a minimum of 2 years of business ownership experience and has managed or directly owned the business.

3. Partner/Parent Sponsorship Pathway

Last but not least, we have the partner or parent sponsorship pathway. The partner visa is an option for those who have a partner who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. The parent sponsorship pathway allows individuals to sponsor their parents to live in Australia.

Australia also uses a points system, where individuals are required to collect a minimum of 65 points to be considered for an Australian Permanent Residency Visa. Factors such as age, qualifications, English-speaking capabilities and work experience will impact the chances of migration. You can use the Points Calculator on the Australian government's website to do your planning and calculations.
