Working part-time jobs are common among both local and international students in Australia. With generous minimum wages and a variety of part-time opportunities, students can easily balance work with their studies.

Commonly used platforms for job-seekers in Australia include Indeed and Seek. Additionally, there are several online communities such as Facebook groups where students will share part-time jobs. International students on a Student VISA can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while studying.

Many students tend to work in either retail or hospitality. While working in these industries, you can expect to earn at least the minimum wage of $20 per hour as an 18-year-old, which increases every year up to the age of 21.

There are also penalty rates that apply on weekends and public holidays, allowing students to earn more when working during these days. On Saturdays, you can expect to earn up to one and a half times your hourly salary and twice as much on Sundays. On public holidays, you will earn two and a half times your hourly rate.

In Australia, thousands of jobs in various industries appear in November to cater for increased business during Christmas. Many students find it beneficial to work as a “Christmas casual” after the second uni semester. Given the casual pay rate is so high and the Christmas season is littered with public holidays and weekend work, students can often earn more in this period than those working permanent jobs.

Many international students also offer tutoring in their native language as it is a great way to earn more since tutors can be paid anywhere from A$25 to A$60 an hour depending on the difficulty of the content. Another way to make money over the summer is to work on farms. This is a common job amongst backpackers as there is no formal application process.
