Australia is the top destination for students studying abroad. With an endless list of things to prepare before embarking on the trip to The Land Down Under, we have compiled a list of some things to take note of.

1. VISA Application

The first step is to prepare for your VISA Application. Some important things you will need to prepare include the Confirmation of Enrolment, Proof of Sufficient Funds, Overseas Student Health Cover Insurance and Character Requirements. You will also need to apply for the VISA using an ImmiAccount. The full step-by-step guide is available on the Australian Government’s website. We at Flying Chalks will also assist our students with the process of applying for their Student VISA.

Next, ensure that your passport is valid for travel during the period of which you are in Australia or if you are going to be studying in Australia for a few years, ensure that your passport is valid for at least a year to give you sufficient time to first settle down.

2. Import Laws and Restrictions

Before flying into Australia, it is important to take note of their strict import laws and restrictions. Food such as coffee beans, baked goods and fresh produce are restricted or limited to be brought into Australia.

In 2022, an Australian woman was fined over $2000 for bringing a Subway sandwich into Australia. Before travelling, check out the Australian Border Force’s website to take note of what you can or cannot bring into Australia. Our top tip would be to do your research before bringing organic items into Australia to avoid the risk of a huge fine!

3. Sign Up for Orientations and Events

Finally, get ready to socialise and get acquainted in school. Remember to sign up for orientations and keep an eye out for events with international students. Check out your university’s website, Facebook page and Instagram page to stay informed on the latest events. For example, the University of Queensland hosts a breakfast event for international students during the orientation week or O-week.
